VMware Fusion Purpose

Unlike many other applications that work as an emulator, VMware Fusion allows you to run applications and operating systems using the resources from your Mac in real-time, meaning no glitches or delays like you find in similar software, such as Microsoft's Virtual PC. VMware Fusion is a virtual machine, which works the same as a physical computer. Virtual machines contain virtual hard drives, disk drives, processor, memory, network adapters and USB controllers. This allows you to enjoy your favorite Windows operating system or applications without needing a separate computer.

System Requirements

Before your VMware Fusion installation, check to see that your system meets the necessary requirements. Your Mac must have an Intel processor. In addition, you need at least a 1.5Ghz processor with 512MB RAM, though 1GB is recommended. You need 275MB of hard drive space to install the application itself. You will also need at least 1GB of hard drive space for each virtual machine you install.

In addition to these requirements, your Mac must also meet the requirements of the guest operating system you plan to install as a virtual machine. You must have Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or higher in order to use VMware Fusion.

VMware Fusion supports a large variety of both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, including Windows 95 and higher, Ubuntu and RedHat Linux and Novell Netware.

VMware Fusion Installation

You can either order a CD version of VMware Fusion or download the software from VMware. The software costs approximately $79.99, though rebates and discounts are offered from time to time.

After downloading the file, double-click the file which will be in the format VMware-Fusion-e.x.p-buildnumber.dmg. This is a disk image file. Double-clicking it mounts the file so you can install VMware Fusion. Open a Finder window and select the VMware Fusion volume you just mounted. Double-click the VMware Fusion icon with the .pkg extension.

Follow the installation assistant prompts to finish the VMware Fusion installation, such as choosing the installation location. Enter your serial number when prompted. If you do not have a serial number, you can purchase one or continue using the software on a trial basis. Restart your system after the installation completes.

After installation, open the Applications folder and double-click VMware Fusion.app. From this screen, you can create a new virtual machine, browse for existing machines, open virtual machines or download pre-configured virtual machines from VMware Fusion. You can use the Windows Easy Install feature to install certain Windows operating systems, which makes Windows installation easier for beginners. The Virtual Applicance Marketplace from VMware Fusion provides downloads of virtual machines for many open source operating systems in addition to Windows. After operating systems are installed, you can then install Windows and open source applications.

The iPad: 3G or not 3G?

We are just past halfway through the 60 day waiting period that Apple announced for the release of the WiFi iPad. While we don’t know everything about the device, we do know there are six different models split in half by a single feature: a GSM 3G cellular
radio for data only. In the last 30 days, the first question many people have asked is “Are you going to get an iPad?” But if the answer is yes, the second question is almost always “Are you going to get the 3G?”

3G ...

The choice to get 3G is tough. First off, the 3G radio will cost you an additional $130. It will also cost you some time if you have already decided to buy an iPad as soon as it is available; the 3G iPad is expected to be available about 30 days after the WiFi only version. This will likely mean you will have to wait until the end of April. It’s not a big deal, but it is something to consider if you aren’t the patient type.

But for that $130 you will get the ability to purchase a micro-SIM card you can use to connect to a 3G or Edge network much like an iPhone does today, but you can only use it for a data connection. One big advantage is that it is currently being offered contract free in the U.S. on AT&T’s network. Apple has also leveraged their relationship with AT&T to get some pretty good rates. They are offering a $14.99/month for up to 250MB of usage and $29.99/month for unlimited usage. Again, this is contract free so you can buy it for a month and then skip several if you want to before you turn it back on.

At this point, it is assumed that since you are buying the device contract free, that it will also be an unlocked device. This would mean that as other companies all over the world announce their plans, you should be able to also purchase micro-SIMs for networks all over the world, and hopefully they will also have monthly plans. This is potentially a great asset for those who travel a lot in the states or globally. In fact, if you only travel internationally once or twice a year, it could still pay off quickly. Currently, international data roaming plans on the iPhone are very expensive. AT&T’s highest available global roaming package for data will only get you 200MB/month and that amount will cost you $199.99. We will have to see what other service providers are going to offer around the world, but Apple and AT&T are off to a great start for the iPad.

Data is not the only advantage you will get for your $130. The GSM radio also comes equipped with a GPS chip. This GPS chip will work much like the GPS in the iPhone, and will be able to use the cell towers as well as satellites so it can more quickly pinpoint your location. This means that the myriad navigation and location apps for the iPhone would also work just as well on the 3G version of the iPad. With the right kind of car mount, the iPad could become the ultimate car navigation system. It would have a nice big screen, and you wouldn’t have to worry about being interrupted by a phone call while you are at a critical intersection. But other location aware social apps or even augmented reality systems would all be able to work well on the 3G iPad. All of this should work just fine without needing to purchase any kind of a monthly package from a service provider.
... or not 3G?

But what do you get if you choose WiFi only? First off, you can save yourself $130. But beyond that, you will still get a WiFi radio that is 802.11 a/b/g/n capable, a step up from the 802.11 b/g radio that come in today’s iPhones and iPod touches. Adding 802.11 a/n means the iPad will be able to connect at faster speeds to a newer WiFi router. This will be especially useful if you are streaming video or moving large files on your local network. The WiFi radio will also allow you to use basic location services based on nearby networks. It’s not always the most accurate way to use location services, but it can be good enough for some social networking apps or to help with finding out what your local weather is. However, it is nowhere nearly good enough to allow you to use navigation apps.
That is the question.

So which should you get? This will depend on several things. The first question is when and how do you plan to use an iPad? If it will be a device that you use mostly at home or work where you have an accessible WiFi network, and if you don’t plan to travel with it a lot, then maybe the WiFi is enough for you. Even if you travel a lot, if you already have an iPhone or some other smartphone with a data plan, you may still want to save yourself $130 and opt out of the 3G. However, if you travel a lot without a smartphone data plan, especially internationally, the 3G data option could actually save you a lot of money and frustration. Plus, the 3G option gives you the ability to use some of the iPhone’s great navigation applications.

The next question is whether you can afford it? If $130 is no big deal, then you may want to go for it. It will make the iPad a very flexible device without locking you into anything that might cost you more money. It will also add a similar amount of resale value to the iPad when you are ready to move on someday. But if money is tight, the WiFi iPad is very usable without that 3G option that many will not use much anyway.
And this is the my answer.

In the end, the 3G decision is a lot like the iPhone vs. iPod touch
decision. This time, there is no monthly contract to make the cost difference as big, but the comparison is very similar. To answer this question myself, I will buy an iPad but I am currently planning to do the WiFi only version. I plan to use the iPad primarily at home, or, when I travel, it will be used in hotel rooms or other places that I might use my MacBook Pro today. I already have an iPhone for my domestic travel, and although I do travel internationally, I have found that WiFi is usually available. But the 3G option is still tempting, and it’s possible I could change my mind. I will almost certainly get the 3G version if I upgrade to a newer iPad someday. I especially like the idea of being able to use the 3G without a contract and on any provider available.

March is here and the first iPads should roll out this month. Hopefully we will find out more about it in the coming weeks. I suspect the we will read some reviews from folks like Walt Mossberg and David Pogue as we get closer.

Which is Better - Mac or PC?

The million dollar question. Macs and PCs both have their pros and cons. But, if you had to pick one, what would you choose - a Mac or a PC?

Macs and PCs

To compare Mac and PC is not that difficult. If you haven't read part 1 of the series yet, be sure to do so. Part 1 features an overview of Mac vs. PC computers.

So, if you had to pick one, which would you choose? A Mac or a PC?

Below is a brief Mac vs. PC review and overview. I will list as many pros as possible about each one.

Why Macs are Better

- Macs give you the ability to run OS X and Windows both (legally).

- Macs work great with other Apple components such as the iPhone, iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Touch, iPod Shuffle, etc...

- Macs are very simple to use.

- Macs are less prown to computer viruses, although they can get viruses.

- Purchasing a Mac gives you Apple Store support.

- Apple uses quality parts to manufacture Macs.

- Macs are trendsetting, designed well, and visually appealing.

- Macs come with better software, out of the box (iLife).

- Macs give you out of the box access to the iTunes Store, if you are an iPod or iPhone user.

- Out of the box, Macs are not loaded with trials and additional software.

- Apple has top of the line phone support.

Why PCs are Better

- You can build a PC from the ground up, picking each individual component. PCs give you maximum customizability.

- PCs are generally cheaper in price. You can get the same processor, amount of RAM, and hard drive capacity for much cheaper with a PC.

- Branded PCs are a wide market. You have many options when it comes to choosing a PC: Dell, HP, Gateway, etc... There are really only 6 types of Mac computer: MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Pro.

- PCs have better software compatibility. You can find practically any software for PC. Macs are more limited in selection.

- PCs generally have better backwards compatibility. You can run Windows 7 on a 5 year old PC. You cannot run Snow Leopard on a Power Mac G5.

- More people use PCs. Thus, PCs have a larger support community behind them.

- The majority of businesses use PCs.

- PCs are better for gaming.

- PCs have more compatible accessories than Macs.

- PCs are more upgradable.

- PCs are open source.

Conclusion

To compare Mac and PC... Which one is better? It's all personal preference. I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's the best answer. In the above review, you can see that both of them have some great advantages. Some people like Macs better, some people like PCs better. Thus, some people absolutely hate Macs, and some people absolutely hate PCs.

It's all an opinion, a preference.

I will however, give you my opinion. As for myself, I'm a Mac. That's just what I prefer. I like Macs because I believe that they are simpler to use, and I like the designs that Apple comes up with. I would rather use OS X than Windows. That may change in the future. But as of now, my opinion is that OS X is a better operating system than Windows.

The Best Way To Setup Time Capsule For The First Time

One complaint that many people have had about Apple's Time Capsule is difficulty setting it up for the first time. However, after some trial and error I figured out a great way to get Time Capsule up and running smoothly.

Setting Up Time Capsule For the First Time

When you first open Time Capsule, you will notice that it comes with a Time Capsule Airport Utility Disc. You do not need to waste time installing this software if you already have the latest version of Apple's Airport Utility on your Mac.

To get started setting up Time Capsule, plug the time capsule into a power outlet and connect it to your computer via ethernet. OS X should automatically recognize it, but if not, open up the Airport Utility. You can do this by doing a spotlight search for it or navigating: Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Utility.

After your have Airport Utility open, it will automatically search for Apple wireless devices. After it finds your Time Capsule, select the continue button. The first screen will ask you to enter a name and password for your Time Capsule. Keep in mind this information will be used for your Time Capsule access only, not your Airport wireless connection. After you have filled in that info, click continue.

The next screen will simply ask you how you want to secure your Time Capsule disks. You can just leave the option set on with device password. This will secure your Time Capsule access with the password you created on the previous screen. Users will not be able to connect without this password. The 2nd option on this screen asks you if you would like to allow guests to connect without a password. Make sure that "Not Allowed" is selected. Click continue

The next screen you come to will allow you to configure other devices with your Time Capsule. Just click continue for now.

The final screen is crucial. On the screen you are at at now, select "Disable wireless and connect to a computer or network using Ethernet".

Now, you will need to open up your Time Machine preferences. To do this, you can either click the Time Machine icon if you still have it in the dock. If not, you can click the time machine icon located on the top navigation bar (next to the bluetooth, sound, and battery indicators).

In the Time Machine preferences window, click the button that says "Select Disk". A box will pop-up that has your Time Capsule hard drive. By default, it should say "Data". Select it.

Time machine will now do its first backup. It will take at least one hour depending on how much data you have.

A couple tips to make sure everything goes right: After Time Machine is done doing its first backup, restart your computer. After it restarts, you are going to do another backup. Click the Time Machine icon, or select Time Machine from the top nav bar and select "Back up now". This time, Time Capsule should not take near as much time to backup. After it has finished, you are going to repair disk permissions. To do this, navigate Finder - Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and click repair disk permissions. Restart your computer once more.

Top Ways To Customize The Look Of A New Mac

The design of Mac OS X is appealing. But if you do not like it, you can certainly customize it to your liking. Let's look at some easy ways to customize the look and feel of your new Mac.

Change Desktop Background

Changing the desktop background is the simplest way to bring a big change to your Mac’s looks. The default background on Leopard is a purple Aurora image. It is very easy to change it. Just right-click on the default image then select “Change Desktop Background” from the contextual menu. This will open up Desktop and Screen Saver preferences window. Go to the Desktop tab and drag an image of your choice onto the large preview box on the screen. You can drag images to the preview box from three different sources. One is the Apple provided images listed under the preview box. These are dozens of good quality images for use. Further below these images are iPhoto albums and events. You can go through them to find your own images to use. The last source is a web-page or a Finder window from where you can drag a picture directly onto the preview box.

There are many websites to find out good images. You can also use Google Images to find free images of any size. In Google Images, select Large or Extra Large images from the menu when searching.

Customize Icons

You can change icons of many things like the hard drive, Finder, Trash, etc. Some icons can be changed by altering some settings on Mac OS X and some needs a utility to do so.

The easiest way to change an icon is to find an icon of your choice from a site or somewhere else and copy it. To copy the icon, o

pen up the Info box by selecting the icon then hitting the Cmd-l keys. The image you see in at top-left side of the window is the icon. Select the icon then open the Edit menu and select Copy. Next, just open the Info box for the folder/file you wish to change, click on the icon then from the Edit menu select Paste. Now the icon has been changed and you can close the Info boxes.

You can find millions of icons on the Internet. You can visit Icon Factory and download icons for your Mac.

If you have Corel Draw or Photoshop, you can do much more to the icons like adding a shadow, glow, etc. And after doing it, just follow the steps above.

There are great tools available that let you customize the icons the way exactly you want them. For this purpose, CandyBar is great. This little software will also allow let you change the looks of your Dock

Change Icon Size

You can change the size of icons on your Desktop and in your folders. To do this, right-click on your Desktop then select Show View Options. Move the slider to change the icons size how you like it. If you have a very few icons on your Desktop, try maximizing the size, it will look pretty good. It also looks good to maximize the photo icons in folders and it lets you see the photos without opening them.

Change The Dock

Do not overlook that you can also customize the size and location of the Dock from the Dock preferences pane. You can also access these options by right-clicking in an empty space on the Dock. It would look good if you reduce the Dock size and move it to the right side. You can also hide the Dock if you do not want to see it at all times.

In addition to the above, you can also organize your Dock as you want. Remove the icons that you never use, put in folders and applications that you use.

As mentioned above, use CandyBar to change other looks of your Dock, for example you can change the outline, texture and symbols.

Printing From The iPad with AirPrint

One of the most promising features of iOS 4.2 for the iPad was printing from the iPad with AirPrint. Unfortunately, this feature was crippled when the update was released. This article will show you ways around the limits of AirPrint.

Native Printing From The iPad

When Apple announced iOS 4.2 several months ago one of the most exciting new features announced was the ability to print from your iPad using AirPrint. AirPrint was suppose to print to any printer connected to your Mac.There have been apps that let you print, but that has always been clunky. The November release of the operating system was bringing native printing capability. Well, November and iOS 4.2 came to the iPad and AirPrint was a lot less than once promised. Right now AirPrint will only print directly to certain AirPrint enabled HP printers. If you don’t have one of these printers AirPrint will not print to your printer without installing something on your Mac.

Software Solutions To Print To Any Printer With The iPad

There is a free solution and a paid solution to using AirPrint on the iPad to any printer connected to your Mac.

The free alternative was something called Hactivator, which installed missing files into your system that activate AirPrint. As per Apple’s request, Hactivator has been pulled. However, the developer of Hactivator has replaced it with AirPrint Activator. Once you install Activator you need to turn on Printer Sharing on your computer, which is outlined below.

To enable Printer Sharing go to the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences. Once there pick Sharing and in the list check off Printer Sharing.

The pay alternative is Printopia. Printopia, from eCamm, is a $9.95 piece of software that will make iPad printing available through your Mac. It installs and lives inside the System Preference window on your Mac. Printopia not only enables printing to your printer, it also prints files to Dropbox or right to your Mac. There is a free seven day trial available to see if this will work for you and if you like it.

The only question about Printopia is how soon will Apple turn printing via printer sharing back on. Is it worth essentially $10 to enable printing and risking having that feature for free at some point in the future? It could be one week, it could be one month, it could be one year. We don’t know.

How To Print From The iPad

Once you have a compatible HP printer or AirPrint enabled on your Mac via a method above (or another method) you are ready to print from your iPad. Printing from the iPad is very easy.

First you have to make sure you are on the same wireless network as the printer. You also have to be in an app that supports AirPrint (Mail, Safari, and iWork apps are a few). Within the app you want to click the arrow that would normally let you email a link , or open a link in Safari (for example). One of the options in the list is now “Print.”

When you choose print you will be prompted to select the printer you want to print to. Choose your printer and say OK. Within seconds the printer will start working without a problem. On occasion I have had to do this twice before the printer show up.

Once you send a print job a little printer icon shows up in the dock. This is very similar to the print utility that opens up when you print on your Mac and a printer shows up in your dock.

Assuming your printer is on, has ink, and has paper your document should print without a problem. If you are printing through a shared printer on your computer you MUST MAKE SURE THE COMPUTER IS ON. If you leave your computer on all of the time this will not be an issue. If you turn your computer off, you have to remember to turn it on if you plan on doing any printing.

If printing is not working open the Print & Fax System Preference. Make sure the "Share this printer on the network" button is checked.

Overall, AirPrint is a new and very promising technology for the iPad. It is a shame that Apple has temporarily disabled some features. Luckily there are solutions out that let anyone print from their iPad.

How to Use iTunes to Organize the Music on Your Mac

Just getting started with music and your Mac? Learn the basics of keeping that music organized with iTunes.

Manually Organize Your Music

Music can be organized a number of ways. You can create subfolders in the Music folder and move your music into them, just as you would do with Documents and Pictures, but you can also do quite a bit of organizing using iTunes. You can create playlists to support a mood, an artist, or an event, or organize the songs to fit on a CD. You can even create smart playlists to automatically change, based on how much you listen to specific songs in your library.

Before you get started, take inventory of what you have and see how it can be organized. Here are some ideas for sorting songs in iTunes via the Edit>View Options choices:

· By artist

· By genre

· By song size

· By rating

· By how often its been played recently

· By year

· By date downloaded or acquired

· By kind

· By album

Use iTunes Consolidate Library Option

If you have music all over your hard drive, you can organize your music by dragging and dropping the songs into the appropriate folder. However, iTunes offers a simple, albeit somewhat ineffective, way to locate all of your tunes and copy them to the iTunes folder. Once they are copied to the folder, you can organize and categorize to your heart’s content.

Unfortunately, you may have noticed that the word “copy” was used in the previous paragraph instead of the word “move.” As you might guess, when a file is copied, it makes a duplicate of the file. That’s unnecessary data, and to get rid of it once the files are copied, you’ll have to spend some time deleting these duplicate files from your hard drive. However, by consolidating, you’ll have all of your files in one place, making backing up your entire music library much easier.

To consolidate all of the music files located outside of the iTunes Music folder and place copies of them in your iTunes Music folder, perform the following steps:

1. Open iTunes.

2. Choose Advanced>Consolidate Library.

3. Accept the warning shown by clicking Consolidate.

How to Make DVD Images in Mac OS X

Creating an image from a DVD or CD in Mac OS X is easy using the built-in Disk Utilities.

What is a DVD Image?

DVD images are virtual discs that can be stored or burned to disc. Imagine copying the contents of an entire disc to another – a virtual disc is the data that is copied.

Making a DVD image in Mac OS X will allow you to make a backup of the disc in question, either by burning it to a new disc or storing it in ISO or DMG format on another drive or computer.

This can be vital for retaining copies of discs that you use regularly; regular use of any disc can reduce its lifespan, with some discs apparently failing after a matter of a few years. It seems increasingly likely (with increasing bandwidths) that optical media will eventually become just a storage option rather than its current purpose as the main shipping medium for software and movies, so being aware of and able to create DVD images and save them to your hard disk could be advantageous in the long term.

How to Make a DVD Image in Mac OS X

Mac OS X comes with all the tools you need to create a DVD image. By simply inserting your DVD, you will be ready in moments to begin the process of creating the DVD image.

After you have stopped the disc from auto-playing, go to the Applications menu (SHIFT+APPLE+A) and open Utilities. From here, open Disc Utilities.

In the Disc Utilities screen, you will see the title of the disc you wish to image across the top of the box, and your disc listed under your disc drive on the left. Notice also the disc information at the bottom of the box, detailing the disc type, format, capacity, and other useful information. You should check this to get an idea of how long the creation of the disc image might take.

You will need to select the disc and click the New Image icon (or go to File > New > Disk Image from disk1 (TITLE)) in order to begin making the DVD image.

Naming Your Disc Image

If you intend to create a disc image that will be saved to your Mac or a separate hard disk drive you should give the disc a sensible, easy to remember and descriptive name. Otherwise, proceed with the default option.

You should leave the options as per their defaults – so Image Format should be “compressed” while Encryption should be “none”. Decide where you are going to save the image, and click Save.

The disc image will then be created, and saved to the location you specified earlier. This may take several minutes to complete, depending on the size of the disc, so you might wish to go and do something else while you wait.

Once complete, do not forget to eject your disc and put it somewhere safe!

Have You Lost Your Mac OS Install Disc AND Your Password? Help Is at Hand!

If your Mac OS install disc lost is lost, you lost your password and the one thing that you are most afraid of losing is your data, this article is the answer to all the questions on your mind. Not only will you be able to figure out how you can reset the password, but will also get your data back.

Help - I've Lost My Password!

The easiest way to recover your password is to use the install discs that came with your Macintosh computer. Not only is it the easiest way, it also happens to be the quickest if you're slight on the technologically challenged side. I'll invoke a reversal of Occam's Razor here and suggest you do either of the following:

1. Look for your Mac install discs.

2. Borrow someone else's Mac OS X install discs.

If you've spent all weekend doing the former then it is time to spend some effort doing the latter. If possible get hold of the box that you Mac shipped in. The reason we need the box is to figure out what version the install discs that came with your computer were and that is usually mentioned on the box.

Of course, if you already remember that information then that is better. You'll need to find a friend or a colleague who has the same install discs as you had. The quickest way to getting this info? Put out a tweet and update your FaceBook status to say that. Some one should step up. Once you get your hands on one of this discs, follow the steps that are outlined here and you should be on your way to data recovery. By the way, even though the Apple Doc might say that the steps are for OS X.4, they work up to the latest version of the Mac OS.

No Luck With the Discs?

Even though all your FB friends might like you enough, there is a chance that you might not find the discs that you're looking for. The second best way to get your hands on your lost password is to figure out the Target Disk mode on your Mac. You will need another Mac to do so and will need to go through a couple of steps to get the Target Disk set up right.

Thankfully, the Intel Macs can run Target Disk off of any old USB hard drive that you've got lying around. One of my cousins who is a certified Apple computer repair tech for a big corporation carries around a Target Disk installed on a USB thumb/pen drive on his keychain all the time. If you have an older Macintosh, specifically one that has the PowerPC processors instead of the Intel ones, then you will need to get your hands on a FireWire disk to make the password recovery process possible.

If the Target Disk fails, here is what you need to do in order to reset your password. Do make not of the fact that you will lose all your Keychain Access data, but it is a small price to pay for getting all your data back.

1. Boot into single user mode (press Command-S at power on)

2. Type fsck -fy

3. Type mount -uw /

4. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist

5. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/[username] [password], replacing [username] with the targeted user and [password] with the desired password.

6. Reboot

6. Enter name and password for an administrator account, then press OK.

4. Enter name, password for an administrator account, and then press OK.

6. Enter password that you want to use for “root” in the Password and Verify fields and then click on OK.

1. If you’re already logged in, open the Apple menu and select Log Out.
2. If you’re logging in using usernames with pictures, then click on Other.
3. Type in “root” in the Name box.

Why Put Your Mac to Sleep?

In Mac OS X you’ve a number of options for putting the Mac and its hard drive(s) to sleep when you’re not using them. When a Mac and its hard drive are asleep, they’re still on but at that time they consume a lesser amount of power. It is also much quicker to wake a Mac or hard drive(s) from sleep mode than to restart a Mac when it is completely shut down, hence it is often preferred by people to put a Mac or hard drive to sleep instead of shutting down when not using it.

Hard Drives

If you put your hard drive to sleep, you will not only save energy but also reduce drive’s wear. So, it is always a good idea to put your hard drive to sleep until it is needed. To do this open the System Preferences in Mac OS X then click on Energy Saver icon. Next, click on the Sleep tab then select the “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible” option.

Many people like to keep their computer on at all times even when they’re not using it. You should be aware that keeping your Mac on and awake consumes unnecessary power. To save power and also the wear, tear of your Mac, Mac OS X gives you a number of options for putting the Mac to sleep:

• Go to the Energy Saver pane then click on the Sleep tab. Move the bar under “Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for”to the desired time interval.

• Click Options tab on the Energy Saver pane. Select the “Allow power button to sleep the computer” option, whenever you want to put your Mac to sleep, just press the power button. Check the user guide of your Mac to see whether or not this option will work on your computer because this does not work with all Mac models.

• Click on the Schedule... button at bottom-right corner of the Energy Saver preferences pane, a small dialog box will open. Check off the check box at left of the drop-down menu then select Sleep from the menu. Schedule your Mac to go to sleep at a particular time you want by typing the desired time in the text box in the end of the line. You can select the days for putting the Mac to sleep from the drop-down menu at left of the time text box. You can select any day of the week, all week days, weekends or everyday.

Wake

When you put your Mac to sleep, naturally you will also want a way to wake it up at a later time. Click on the Options tab then select the “Wake for Ethernet network administrator access” option, this applies to Macs connected to a network with Ethernet settings.

You can schedule your Mac to wake or start up (when switched off) at a set time. Click on the Schedule… button at bottom-right corner of the window, a small dialog box will open. Check off the Start up or wake check box and enter the time in the text box when you want to wake your Mac. Next, click on the drop-down menu at left of the time text box to select the days of the week for starting or waking the Mac.

The Best Way To Setup Time Capsule For The First Time

One complaint that many people have had about Apple's Time Capsule is difficulty setting it up for the first time. However, after some trial and error I figured out a great way to get Time Capsule up and running smoothly.

Setting Up Time Capsule For the First Time

When you first open Time Capsule, you will notice that it comes with a Time Capsule Airport Utility Disc. You do not need to waste time installing this software if you already have the latest version of Apple's Airport Utility on your Mac.

To get started setting up Time Capsule, plug the time capsule into a power outlet and connect it to your computer via ethernet. OS X should automatically recognize it, but if not, open up the Airport Utility. You can do this by doing a spotlight search for it or navigating: Finder - Applications - Utilities - Airport Utility.

After your have Airport Utility open, it will automatically search for Apple wireless devices. After it finds your Time Capsule, select the continue button. The first screen will ask you to enter a name and password for your Time Capsule. Keep in mind this information will be used for your Time Capsule access only, not your Airport wireless connection. After you have filled in that info, click continue.

The next screen will simply ask you how you want to secure your Time Capsule disks. You can just leave the option set on with device password. This will secure your Time Capsule access with the password you created on the previous screen. Users will not be able to connect without this password. The 2nd option on this screen asks you if you would like to allow guests to connect without a password. Make sure that "Not Allowed" is selected. Click continue

The next screen you come to will allow you to configure other devices with your Time Capsule. Just click continue for now.

The final screen is crucial. On the screen you are at at now, select "Disable wireless and connect to a computer or network using Ethernet".

Now, you will need to open up your Time Machine preferences. To do this, you can either click the Time Machine icon if you still have it in the dock. If not, you can click the time machine icon located on the top navigation bar (next to the bluetooth, sound, and battery indicators).

In the Time Machine preferences window, click the button that says "Select Disk". A box will pop-up that has your Time Capsule hard drive. By default, it should say "Data". Select it.

Time machine will now do its first backup. It will take at least one hour depending on how much data you have.

A couple tips to make sure everything goes right: After Time Machine is done doing its first backup, restart your computer. After it restarts, you are going to do another backup. Click the Time Machine icon, or select Time Machine from the top nav bar and select "Back up now". This time, Time Capsule should not take near as much time to backup. After it has finished, you are going to repair disk permissions. To do this, navigate Finder - Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and click repair disk permissions. Restart your computer once more.

What Should I Look For In An Online Backup Service For My Mac?

Do you want to start using an online backup service for the data on your Mac? Do you know where to start looking? This article will give you some guidance in what to look for when you are shopping for your online backup company.

Recently I decided it was time to have an offsite backup for important files on my computer (mainly movies and photos of my son). I have two external backups in my house, but if anything were to happen to those drives all of those files would be lost. Of course, the first thing you should look at in exploring backup services for your Mac is the system requirements for the company. Most importantly, is the service Mac compatible? Macs are growing in popularity, but there are still many companies and services that do not work with and/or support Macs.

Pricing and Storage

Next to being Mac compatible, the main feature of any service that you will be looking at is price. Most services range from four to five dollars a month depending on how much you want to pay up front.

One nice feature of Crashplan is that you can actually backup to a computer at someon else’s house instead of the Crashplan servers. If you do this route, the service is free. However, you have to make sure the computer at the house you are accessing is always on and available to backup to. If it isn’t on 24/7 it is useless.

The next item on your list is how much storage space you are getting for your money. Many services give unlimited space, however when I researched the company I was going with I found a couple that did not provide unlimited storage. I highly suggest you go for unlimited space, but there might be something in a service you like that overrides this.

Apple to Announce iPad Magazine & Newspaper Subscription Model at December Event?

Following rumors earlier this week that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are to unveil the world’s first iPad-only newspaper subscription, comes a new report from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber that suggests Apple are to hold a media event on December 9th, where News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch will announce the plan for a new billing option for periodicals on the iPad.

Gruber wrote today, “My understanding, based on information from sources not at Apple, is that this is not something like iBooks — there is no central ‘iNews’ or ‘Newsstand’ app from Apple. Rather, it’s a new subscription billing option for apps — true recurring submissions — paid through your iTunes account.”

Although recent rumors have surrounded an iPad-only newspaper from News Corp, it seems that the December event won’t be just to announce this publication, but rather to announce a new recurring subscription model for newspaper and magazine companies to use that would allow for better delivery of their publications through Apple’s tablet.

As Cult of Mac’s John Brownlee points out, a subscription-billing option for the iOS will only encourage more publications to release digital editions of their periodicals for the iPad. Brownlee also indicates that the model could pave the way for subscriptions to other services, such as multiplayer online games or Netflix subscriptions.

Going from wired to wireless? If you've just picked up a new wireless keyboard from Apple, pairing that wireless keyboard will probably be your next step. But don't worry! Pairing your new wireless keyboard is simple. Read on to accomplish this step by step.

Bluetooth and Pairing

Apple's Mac OS X supports a variety of keyboards, including wired keyboards, radio frequency (RF) wireless keyboards, and Bluetooth wireless keyboards. Each of these technologies has various advantages and disadvantages. If you need to pair a wireless keyboard it probably uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with the computer.

Bluetooth technology allows devices to communicate with other devices securely, with minimal interference. Since Bluetooth devices work exclusively with another device, those devices must be paired. Pairing is a simple process where the computer and the Bluetooth device establish a mutual connection. In order to do so, the device must be confirmed with the computer. Luckily, with an Apple, pairing wireless keyboards is simple and quick.

Prepare for Pairing

Your Bluetooth wireless keyboard will need to be prepared for the pairing. If you have never used the keyboard before, be sure it is loaded with a fresh set of batteries. Since Bluetooth keyboards are wireless there is no cord to provide power to the keyboard.

Next, turn the keyboard on. On the Apple wireless keyboard the power button is on the right side near the eject button. You will probably need to hold the power button down until the indicator light turns on. The indicator light on your Apple WIreless Keyboard will blink until pairing is complete.

Now we need to ensure that the computer is actively looking for Bluetooth devices. Click the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar and ensure Bluetooth is turned on. Next, launch System Preferences from the Dock. The System Preferences window is divided into many subcategories. We are interested in Hardware. Find the Keyboard icon within the Hardware category.

The Keyboard settings area allows you to control things such as key repeat rate, function key behavior, and keyboard shortcuts. Of course, we're interested in pairing the Bluetooth keyboard. Click on the Set Up Bluetooth Keyboard button at the bottom of the window.

Pairing the Wireless Keyboard

The keyboard pairing utility should find your new keyboard. Follow the steps on-screen to pair the keyboard to your Mac. Pairing usually consists of pressing certain keys in a specific sequence. The entire pairing process ensures that the correct keyboard is being paired with the correct computer, and that there is mutual security between them.

If the pairing utility is unable to find a keyboard, quit System Preferences. Check your keyboard to ensure it is still turned on. You can do this on the Apple wireless keyboard by quickly pressing the power button. The indicator light above the eject key should glow a solid green for a few moments. If the keyboard does not appear to respond, remove the batteries, re-insert them, and try again. You may want to try swapping batteries if the keyboard does not respond or if the pairing utility still cannot detect the keyboard.

Causes for Problems installing Mac Os X 10.5 Leopard

This problem could occur due to a number of reasons, which include the following:

1. You have installed and used TechTool Pro (Mac repair tool) to create an eDrive on a particular volume.

2. Leopard performs a thorough check of the hard disk before listing them in the destination window. If a problem is detected during this check, this issue may occur.

Due to either reason, this problem can occur and the installation may fail.
Resolution

To resolve these problems, you need to make sure your hard disk has no errors on it. You can use the Disk Utility software to verify and repair the problem volume. Once the errors on your disk have been removed, try the installation again and it should work this time.

The iPad and MacBook Compared

Many people have considered buying an iPad instead of a MacBook. In fact my uncle did just that. The iPad suited his needs fine and he decided he didn’t need the MacBook. While the iPad might be able to replace a MacBook for some, it might not for others. Read on to find out the main differences and similarities between the two.

One is a Tablet, One is a Laptop

Of course, the biggest difference is the form factor. The form factor controls the way you use each device. The iPad is a smaller, lighter tablet (like a giant iPod Touch) and the MacBook is a heavier laptop available in various sizes and configurations. With that difference comes more flexibility for the MacBook. The MacBook has ports (ie. USB, ethernet, etc) for connecting devices while the iPad does not. That’s not to say you can’t connect anything to the iPad, but you can connect a lot more to a laptop.

Being a laptop the MacBook has a real keyboard. The iPad has a touch keyboard, but you can use a bluetooth keyboard or connect a USB keyboard via the camera connector kit.

Price and Storage

There other big differences between a MacBook and an iPad are price and storage space. The iPad starts at $499, while a MacBook starts at $999. That is a big difference.

However, that $499 for an iPad only gets you 16GB of storage, while the $999 MacBook will get you 250GB of storage. Again, a big difference. If you want to carry around a lot of music and a lot of video you need to consider the 64GB iPad model, or for a few hundred dollars more a MacBook.

Applications and Software

Both the MacBook and the iPad can run a lot of different applications. The biggest difference is you can only add apps to the iPad with Apple’s App Store (unless you jailbreak, which is another story). Since you can only use the App Store, you are limited in what goes on your iPad by Apple’s app approval process. If Apple says no, you can’t put it on your iPad.

The MacBook, on the other hand, can have any Mac compatible application on it. If you can find it on the internet and it is compatible you can install it.

While the iPad is great and can do almost anything Mac apps can, there are some things it cannot do. You cannot do professional graphics or movie editing on the iPad. You'll want the processing power of a MacBook for that.

If you own a house, you’ve probably had it sprayed for termites. If you have a dog, it probably wears a flea collar. If you have a car, you regularly have the oil changed. If you do what your doctor tells you, you go in once a year for a checkup. You do these things to prevent problems, catch problems early, and deal with problems as (or before) they arise, hopefully finding small problems and fixing them before they become even bigger ones. You need to take that same kind of care with your computer. In this article, you’ll learn how to delete the Library cache to avoid future problems, or to fix a corrupt cache.

A cache is where OS X stores data it needs to access often (such as extensions and icons). Storing data in cache makes your Mac run faster because it can obtain the data it needs quickly. Sometimes the cache gets corrupt, though, because of software updates, conflicts, and unexpected quits, and this can cause problems. You should delete the library cache occasionally to maintain your Mac’s performance.

You might experience application or system crashes or see seemingly random problems that don’t seem to be caused by anything in particular at all. This could be caused by a corrupt library cache. To prevent the cache from becoming corrupt, you should delete everything in the Caches folders once a month, about the same time you run the file system checker mentioned in a previous article.

Here’s how to clean your caches:

1. Choose Users>your user name>Library>Caches.

2. From the Menu bar, choose Edit>Select All.

3. Drag all of the items to the Trash.

4. From the Macintosh HD, choose Library>Caches.

5. Choose Edit>Select All, and drag the items to the Trash. You’ll be required to type in an administrator’s password.

Mac OS X is a superb operating system, offering a unique and memorable user experience.

Of course, getting a Mac is another matter entirely – they can be quite expensive to purchase new, with the cheapest model, the Mac Mini, costing around $650. You could even pay $3000 for a top of the range model.

What you may not know, however, is that OS X is an incredibly flexible operating system that can run on a variety of different hardware architectures. This is a development that has only been the case since Apple discarded the Power PC architecture in favour of Intel processors and chipsets in 2006.

A result of this has been a small sub-section of Mac users installing the OS on non-Mac hardware, such as PCs, laptops and netbooks.

A Brief History of the Intel Hackintosh

Ever since Apple announced its move to developing a new version of OS X to run on Intel chipsets, hackers (that is in the traditional, positive sense of the word) and developers have been looking for ways to alter the operating system in order to get it to run on non-supported hardware [LINK].

Can I Install OS X on a Netbook?

The plain answer to this question is “yes” – however it won’t be as easy as you think. Simply buying Mac OS X discs and inserting them into your netbook’s external DVD drive won’t allow you to install the operating system.

In order to do this, you will need to look for specific builds of the operating system designed for your particular device.

You should also note that while it is possible to install OS X on a netbook, it is a breach of the use of OS X as per Apple’s licence. Some commentators have suggested sticking an Apple logo on your chosen hardware may circumvent this.

Netbooks Capable of Running OS X

Brighthub isn’t the place for a definitive list of netbooks capable of running OS X – this is a regularly changing environment, and as more netbooks are released it is going to continue changing.

However as a rule of thumb, you would be looking at the greatest success with an Asus Eee PC 900A, 901, 1000H, 1000HD and 1000HE, a Dell Mini 10v (1011), Dell Mini 9, HP Compaq Mini 700, HP Mini 1000, MSI Wind U100/123, Samsung N310 and the Samsung NC10.

This isn’t to say that other netbooks will not work，but these devices represent the best total level of hardware compatibility.
